First look at new park planned for Cardiff's £2bn 'garden city'

Details of the "green gateway" to Cardiff’s new £2 billion garden city have been released

The Gateway Linear Park will be the main entrance to the huge Plasdŵr development in the north west of the city, which will eventually deliver up to 7,000 homes over the next two decades

Dubbed "Cardiff’s garden city for the 21 st century", the development "blends the best of town and country", with more than 40% of it consisting of green space for residents and visitors to use.

Situated near Llantrisant Road in Plasdŵr’s Groeswen neighbourhood, the development's new gateway features footpaths and cycle ways running through each end, as well as designated play trails and outdoor seating areas, providing residents and the local community a space to unwind and keep active.

Its tree-lined paths will link residents to the development's main commercial centre, residential areas and its first primary school.

The new park will also include a series of swales – or planted drainage features - which will be installed to enhance biodiversity and help reduce the amount of pollutants entering the sewage network. Drainage ponds, trees, and wildflower meadows will all feature to provide a safe network of habitats for local wildlife.

There are public art installations planned for both entrances of the park from Llantrisant Road, with developers working with Welsh artists to commission pieces celebrating the heritage and landscape of the local area.

Project Director of Plasdŵr, Wayne Rees, said:“We’re really pleased we’re finally able to announce specific details on Plasdŵr’s Gateway Linear Park. As with other aspects of Plasdŵr, our aim is to take inspiration from local heritage and landscape and the Gateway Linear Park gives an early indication of how the garden city will look and feel once its complete.

“The development of green infrastructure is a key element of our plan showing our wider commitment to creating a sustainable community.

"We’re also looking forward to partnering with local talent through commissioning pieces of art. This will make a significant contribution to the cultural well-being of the community as well as the physical landscape.”

The new development is set over 900 acres of prime land in the St Fagans, Radyr and Morganstown and Fairwater wards of north west Cardiff that formed part of the historic Plymouth Estate.

Around five miles from the city centre, it is hoped that it will provide a solution to Cardiff’s need for high quality homes as the capital continues to grow.

While the construction of Plasdŵr's first primary school is underway, the development will eventually feature more facilities for residents and visitors, including three further schools and a district centre with shops, bars and restaurants, as well as parks, playing fields and healthcare services.

In June, plans were filed for another 337 houses for the site near Fairwater and St Fagans with developer Taylor Wimpey joining the project alongside Redrow, Bellway and Lewis Homes.
