First look at new £18.5m police and fire headquarters

Plans to create a new £18.5m joint headquarters for the police and fire service is starting to take shape.

It is hoped the shared headquarters at Sherwood Lodge will reduce costs in the long run and allow both forces to work better together when dealing with major incidents.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service will leave their headquarters at Bestwood Lodge Drive in Arnold and move into the transformed police base at Sherwood Lodge.

The three-storey building will include a new control room, training centre, changing rooms, gym, canteen and refurbished offices for the two emergency services.

Nottinghamshire Police headquarters at Sherwood Lodge will remain in use.

Beeston-based contractors Henry Brothers Midlands started work on-site in mid-July.

Work is now underway on the steel frame of the building. A new access road that runs around the perimeter of the site is also being constructed.

Both emergency services intend to move into the new facility in early 2022.

Chief Constable Craig Guildford, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "This is always an exciting part of any project – as the building you have spent so many months looking at on paper begins to take shape in front of you.

"However, whilst I am pleased to report the project remains on time and under budget, it is worth stressing again that the idea of a joint headquarters site is about far more than just this new building – or indeed any of the other works we are carrying out to improve the current Sherwood Lodge site.

"Fundamentally this project is about a long-term commitment to a future of joint working and partnership by two organisations with proud and shared histories of strong local public service – a history that will be marked next week with the unveiling of a joint memorial garden for fallen members of both services."

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service area manager Bryn Coleman added: "The joint headquarters project is a great opportunity to bring both organisations closer together and enabling us to work collaboratively with our Police colleagues to provide safer communities across the city and county. The new headquarters will help to build on the strong relationship that already exists between both services."

Police and fire currently share premises at Highfields, West Bridgford and London Road fire stations, and at the new tri-service hub in Hucknall.

The two organisations also jointly procure fuel, have a shared drone and incident welfare vehicle, and conduct joint safety and educational initiatives.
