First look at Jim McLean Dundee United statue as Tangerines prepare to honour legendary boss before Dundee derby

Dundee United have unveiled a statue of late legendary manager Jim McLean ahead of the first Dundee derby of the season on Sunday.

McLean is one of the best known and loved figures in the club's 112-year history having led them to their only top flight title in 1983.

He was in charge for 22 years and oversaw a period of success unlike anything they have seen before or since.

United announced the statue's development earlier this year and it was always the plan to unveil it ahead of their first derby with rivals Dundee, the first time the famous clash has taken place in the top flight for five years.

And pictures have now emerged, one of which shows McLean's wife Doris gazing up at the statue as the sun sets.

McLean passed away in December last year after a long battle with dementia.

He had been inducted into the Scottish football hall of fame five years earlier and is widely viewed as one of the greatest managers in Scottish football history.

The statue depicts the iconic image of McLean lifting the Premier Division trophy in 1983.
