Earlier this week Glasgow City Council gave formal approval to plans for a number of temporary changes in the city to help encourage social distancing.
As part of the 'Spaces for People' programme plans, this included a change to certain pedestrian crossings in the city centre to be automatically set at the green man and requiring to be activated by vehicles, rather than on pedestrian demand.
The first of these new pedestrian priority traffic lights has been installed in Glasgow city centre at the junction of St Vincent Street and Buchanan Street.
The lights were spotted by Thomas Cornwallis, Co-convenor of GoBike, who campaign for better infrastructure, policy, and political support for cycling to be a safe, efficient, clean and healthy mode of active travel for everyone.
Speaking to Glasgow Live, Thomas said: "It’s great to see the Council already acting on their plans for Space For People.
"It may seem simple but small things like this change our city to cater for people first, and that’s something that’s extremely important due to current situation and for the future.
"We hope the council is quickly putting in their other measures to create a city that helps gives people space and access to walk, wheel and cycle.”
Other temporary measures being made as part of the programme to encourage social distancing include the creation of temporary strategic cycling routes and the installation of additional on-street cycle parking where space is available.
