First look at Formby Hall's plans for luxury retreat with 11 new woodland lodges

Formby Hall golf resort and spa could look drastically different if controversial plans are given the go-ahead from Sefton Council.

The iconic site has already undergone huge renovation works over the past eight months, after the local authority gave the green light for owners to transform it into a 'world-class destination’.

And now the golf resort and spa, on Southport Old Road, could have 11 new woodland lodges.

These are just part of a wider scheme for the upmarket venue - which is set to be completely reshaped with new bedrooms, a new golf clubhouse and function room, and high-end spa building.

The new refurbishment comes less than two years after owners spent millions of pounds on a huge refit.

They say the new facilities and layout will place Formby Hall firmly on the map as one of the best golf, spa and leisure resorts in England.

Back in November, Cllr Daren Veidman, Cabinet Member Planning and Building Control, said: “This phase of investment has the potential to significantly enhance the reputation of the Formby resort, build upon Sefton 's growing tourism economy and in particular the 'Golf Coast' and we look forward to working with them to make these exciting plans a reality.

"It really reinforces that Sefton is open for business.”

The new spa will comprise 12 treatment rooms, several relaxation, an extensive suite of thermal experiences, indoor and outdoor vitality pools and hot tubs, internal and alfresco dining, and an extensive external terrace with sunken fire pits and luxury day beds.

Proposals to build the woodland lodges have twice been deferred by the planning committee, after objections regarding environmental concerns.

The Formby Civic Society is against the plans, due to loss of trees, habitat and green belt.

However, at a meeting in April, Sefton ’s tourism manager said he supports the scheme and considers that this type of niche accommodation is really important in diversifying the type of accommodation available in the borough.

The plans are set to be approved at the local authority's planning committee meeting on Wednesday (August 28).
