First look at Dr Who New Year's special Revolution of the Daleks on BBC One

Dr Who is back to mark the start of 2021 with an action-packed festive special on New Year's Day.

BBC bosses have confirmed that the Thirteenth doctor will make a triumphant return for the sci-fi classic on BBC One this New Year's Day.

On January 1, Jodie Whittaker will be reprising her role as the Dr alongside a stellar cast that includes John Barrowman and Chris Noth.

Dame Harriet Walter will also make her Doctor Who debut alongside Misfits star Nathan Stewart-Jarrett.

Loyal fans will remember that the end of Series 12 saw the Dr locked in a high-security alien prison that was impossible to escape.

However, it remains to be seen how the rest of the characters are getting by without her and how they will cope when they learn of the terrifying threat against them all.

Titled the Revolution of the Daleks, this year's festive special will see the return of the Dr's arch-nemesis the Daleks - and they have a fresh new design.

Dr Who's executive producer Chris Chibnall has teased that the upcoming show will see a smorgasbord of talented actors alongside an epic storyline.

“We’ve crammed this year's Doctor Who Festive Special with an explosion of extraordinary acting talent," Chris revealed.

"Where else would you get British acting royalty, a globally renowned US screen star, an (inter)national treasure of stage and screen and one of Britain's hottest young actors — just in the guest cast!

The producer went on to explain that the New Year's special is certainly explosive.

Chris added: "Put those together with Jodie Whittaker, Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole (and Daleks! Did I mention Daleks!) — and you get a cast to be exterminated for. And things will explode. Promise.”
