First look at Downton Abbey movie sequel sees heartbroken Tom Branson find love

Downton Abbey fans will once again be swept back to the 1920s as they get a glimpse of the movie sequel's trailer which teases of the sound of wedding bells in the air.

The phenomenally successful period drama which was born as a ITV drama, is taking to the big screen for a second time, with show favourites including Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) and Tom Branson (Allan Leech) making an appearance.

And in a newly released trailer, it would appear happier times are to follow for former chauffeur Tom Branson who tragically lost his wife Lady Sybill during the birth of their daughter back in Series 3.

After a failed romance with teacher Sarah Bunting, the Irishman fell for Miss Smith, but faced resistance from the Crawley family before tying the knot.

The fifteen second clip features sweeping views of the famed fictional Yorkshire estate.

In one, Robert Crawley (played by Hugh Bonneville) and his daughter, Dockery's Lady Mary, stand at the top of their grand staircase.

Another shot shows Bertie Pelham (Harry Hadden-Paton), Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael), Lucy and Tom walking to a game of tennis while Myrna Dalgleish (Laura Haddock) can be stepping out of a car in another.

A longer trailer will be screened for cinema-goers watching 'Belfast' - a film inspired by the BAFTA winner Kenneth Branagh's early childhood growing up in Northern Ireland.

The teaser was also shared on Downton Abbey's official social media pages alongside a caption that read: "The teaser trailer for #DowntonAbbey: A New Era will be exclusively in theaters on @belfastmovie this weekend."

Although the forthcoming film has been kept under wraps, creator Julian did tell People magazine this week: "It's really a new era. The further the 20s went along, the more the world was changing in so many ways.

"Everything from entertainment to transport was really different by the end of the 20s. That's what we're referring to in that."

He added: "As we know from the last film, Mary may not be the titular head of the household, but she is effectively running the show. We take that further."

Other stars to feature in the film include Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Nathalie Baye and Dominic West have joined the cast.

But fans of the show will have to wait to catch up with The Crawleys a little while longer, as the release has been pushed back from initial plans for it to hit the Christmas period, instead it will be screened in cinemas from March 18, 2022.
