First look at Bridgerton series two as Lady Whistledown 'sharpens her knives'

The mysterious and vindictive Lady Whistledown is back has promised that her "knives are sharpened" for the brand new series of Bridgerton.

Fans were teased with a trailer of the return of the Netflix hit where the 18th century Gossip Girl is ready to cause more mayhem. This series tells the story of Lord Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan Bailey, and his quest to find a wife.

An adaptation of Julia Quinn's novel The Viscount Who Loved Me, the first series focused on the steamy relationship between Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor, and Regé-Jean Page's character, the Duke of Hastings.

Fans were devastated when Rege-Jean opted out of the second series of the racy show to focus on making films, and he is working on a new Netflix show - narrating an upcoming nature documentary, Surviving Paradise: A Family Tale.

The new series of Bridgerton, though, will shine the spotlight on Daphne's rogue brother Anthony - who in the last series was obsessed with the opera singer Siena Rosso.

However Anthony is expected to marry someone among his social class, and Siena sadly didn't make the cut and the couple went separate ways.

But Anthony, who often rebelled against his high society lifestyle, also decided that a dutiful wife wasn't for him either and resigned himself to staying single.

The new trailer follows a messenger boy's delivery run to Queen Charlotte, played by Golda Rosheuvel.

The Queen gives a cheeky smile as she is handed the news letter from the mysterious Lady Whistledown, whose anonymity was revealed in series one as Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan).

Voiced by Julie Andrews, Lady Whistledown says: "Dearest gentle reader, do you miss me?

"As the members of our ton questioned my identity and means this author has been doing but one thing," she says sweetly.

"Honing my skills. No, even better, I've been sharpening my knives - for all of you."

The scandalous clip ends with Penelope writing the newsletter with a mischievous grin on her face as she signs Lady Whistledown's name.

The official description of the hugely popular series reads: "Driven by his duty to uphold the family name, Anthony’s search for a debutante who meets his impossible standards seems ill-fated until Kate (Simone Ashley) and her younger sister Edwina (Charithra Chandran) Sharma arrive from India.

"When Anthony begins to court Edwina, Kate discovers the true nature of his intentions — a true love match is not high on his priority list — and decides to do everything in her power to stop the union.

"But in doing so, Kate and Anthony’s verbal sparring matches only bring them closer together, complicating matters on both sides.

"Across Grosvenor Square, the Featheringtons must welcome the newest heir to their estate while Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) continues to navigate the ton whilst keeping her deepest secret from the people closest to her."

*Bridgerton returns for a second season on March 25, 2022.
