First Liverpool FC fans descend on Barcelona as city prepares for influx of Reds fans ahead of Champions League clash

Thousands of Liverpool FC fans are expected to descend on Barcelona over the next two days for the Champions League clash - and the city is ready for them.

The first wave of fans made their way over to the Spanish city on Monday, taking any routes available to get to the first leg of the Reds' semi-final clash against FC Barcelona.

Barcelona is expected to be flooded with Liverpool shirts, chants and excited fans all taking in the atmosphere ahead of the game.

However, Monday was a bit more of a subdued affair, with the earliest supporters arriving into the city ahead of the match.

One RyanAir flight from Liverpool directly into Barcelona certainly got into the spirit - with one passenger claiming fans persuaded the pilot to play You'll Never Walk Alone along the speaker system as they came in to land.

Other flights from Belfast, Gatwick and Leeds Bradford were among the routes carrying Liverpool fans into the city, as supporters sought out any routes available to get them to the semi-final.

In Barcelona, the city is preparing for a huge influx of away fans for the match - with thousands of fans expected to fly over without tickets to the game.

Tourist shops across the city are already stocked up with half-and-half scarves emblazoned with the teams and date of the Champions League fixture.

Barcelona are worried about Liverpool referee - and this is why

While there isn't currently understood to be any official fanzone arranged for supporters travelling to the match without tickets, plenty of Liverpool fans will be piling into the bars around the Camp Nou to soak up the atmosphere.

Match-night stalwarts BOSS Night will be running an event on the day of the match - but won't be screening the game as they did when Liverpool faced Bayern Munich earlier in the season.

The match day event organisers will be holding a pre-game party at Razzmataz on Carrer dels Almogavers, but decided against screening the match for the first leg of the semi-final.

Dan Nicholson, one of the organisers of BOSS Night, said the scale of the Camp Nou and atmosphere around a Barcelona fixture means many supporters will likely choose to head to the ground to watch the match.

Merseyside Police are expected to share updates to fans on travel to the ground and other important matchday information after a meeting with police in Barcelona at 6.30pm on Tuesday, April 30.

Travel advice is also available on the Liverpool FC website for fans heading over for the match.

The Liverpool ECHO will be bringing you all the build-up and fan coverage ahead of the game from Barcelona, so don't forget to follow us on Twitter and Facebook for all the latest news ahead of the Champions League clash.
