YU Yuphoria Cyanogen smartphone: First impressions

YU Yuphoria Cyanogen smartphone: First impressions
Yuphoria will be available exclusively on Amazon.in for Rs6,999 from 28 May

On 12 May, Micromax announced its second phone under the Yu brand, the Yuphoria. The company’s Yu Yureka (Rs.8,999) has been a popular affordable Android smartphone in the country, with Yu claiming that it has sold 400,000 units since December.

Yuphoria will be available exclusively on Amazon.in for Rs.6,999 from 28 May. At that price, it competes directly with the Moto E 4G and Lenovo A6000 Plus, which were launched in April at Rs.7,999 and Rs.7,499, respectively.

Smaller screen

The Yuphoria is a more mainstream device than the Yu Yureka—it is priced lower and has a slightly smaller screen (5 inches compared to 5.5 inches), which makes it a little more compact.

Premium build

The Yuphoria is definitely more stylish—it has a metal frame and comes in buffed steel and champagne gold colours. At this price, there are hardly any rivals that offer a similar premium in-hand feel, barring the Micromax Canvas Spark. In terms of design, the back panel feels very much like the Microsoft Lumia 830, with the big circular camera module. The rest of the panel is plain with matte-white finish. The frame design looks similar to Sony’s expensive Xperia smartphones, particularly the Xperia Z3. The power button is placed between the volume keys, which is slightly confusing. All in all, the Yuphoria is a well-made phone that looks much more expensive than it actually is.

Cyanogen flavour of Android

photo
The Yuphoria runs Cyanogen operating system (OS) 12, which is based on the latest version of Android 5.0 (Lollipop). Cyanogen is a community of developers who customize Android. The detailed customization options are similar to the ones we saw on the Cyanogen version running on the much more expensive OnePlus One (Rs.18,999).

The specifications of the Yuphoria are slightly inferior to the Yureka on paper, but the price of the new phone is lower too. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core 64-bit processor, the same processor used in the Moto E 4G and Lenovo A6000 Plus. It can handle some of the latest games and allows a certain degree of multitasking without hampering performance.

Stiff competition

photo
The Yu Yuphoria, A6000 Plus and Moto E 4G may be priced close to each other, but each has its own strong point. The Yuphoria is the best-looking and lightest of the three. The A6000 Plus has a capable camera, while the Moto E 4G runs an uncustomized version of Android which is easy and fast to use even with basic specifications.
