First images of Manchester Aquatics Centre £31m refurb as pool closes until 2023

These are the first images of how Manchester Aquatics Centre will look following a £31million refurb.

The venue, which was built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, was fully open for the final time today (Friday) before work begins.

Doors are expected to reopen to the public in summer 2023.

A reduced programme of swimming for schools, Britain's Para-swimming team and the public will continue from December 13 in the centre's training pool during the eighteen month closure.

The Aquatics Centre opened in 2000 and is the country's busiest swimming pool with an estimated 500,000 visitors per year.

Facilities include two 50m pools, a 25m diving pool and a leisure pool as well as a fitness studios and cafe.

The two main pools have moveable floors and sinkable 'booms' which allow them to be split into sections of varying dimensions and depths.

But after two decades of heavy use the technology has reached the end of its shelf life and is need of replacement and upgrades.

As one of the most energy intensive buildings in the city, the refurb is also a key part of Manchester Council's plans to become 'zero carbon' by 2038.

New digital and sustainable technologies such as solar panels will be fitted to help reduce the centre's carbon footprint.

General manager Roxanne Walker told the M.E.N: "We're a centre that caters for so many different types of people - whether that be children learning to swim, elite athletes competing in events, we've got water polo, diving, competitive swimming, people use the centre for social reasons, fitness reason... it's the crowning jewel of Manchester!

"So we are sad that it's closing in its current guise but we're looking forward to the future and the next part of Manchester Aquatic's life."

"The flumes and the leisure pool as we know them now will be replaced with a really superb under 5s offer which will all be around fun, first and foremost, but it's all about building water confidence.

"The Interactive Splash Zone is what we're going to call it.

"The whole centre will have a complete makeover, it will look so much more up-to-date and modern.

"It's such an important facility not just for the customers but for Manchester as a city.

"For me personally, my career started her as a part-time receptionist 11 years ago, it was never my intention to still be here but when the building and the city and the sport it does hold you.

"We are sad to see it close in its current guise but we're super excited to see what the next phase will be like.

"A lot of our staff are joining different centres in Manchester so you'll still see our friendly faces!

"Please come back in eighteen months and we hop you'll be as excited as we are to see what the centre will look like then."

Councillor Rabnawaz Akbar, executive member for Neighbourhoods added: "The work to upgrade the facilities at the Centre is needed to future proof it for the next 20 years and beyond and although it may be inconvenient in the short term, the long term gain of high quality, affordable leisure facilities for the community will be very much worth the wait when the work is complete.

"There is a huge range of alternative centres across the city which the local community can use while the work take place including the Sugden Centre which is close by and we have tried to ensure that some swimming can take place although it is much reduced while the refurbishment programme is underway.
