First images of emergency services responding to serious crash on A189 Spine Road

Emergency services are at the scene of a serious crash between a lorry and a car on the A189 Spine Road.

A lorry and a car collided on the southbound carriageway near Cramlington at around 10.50am on Sunday.

As a result, two occupants of the car had become trapped after the vehicle flipped onto its roof.

Police closed the A189 Spine Road southbound to traffic to allow an air ambulance to land on the road.

They were joined by a huge response from the ambulance service while Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service also dispatched two appliances and a specialist rescue unit.

Two people have been cut free from the car and one person has been taken to Cramlington Hospital with serious injuries.

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 10.44am to reports of persons trapped in a vehicle following a road traffic collision involving a car and a lorry.

“We have dispatched a trauma car, two Hazardous Area Response Teams, three ambulances and an officer to the scene.

“We have also requested air support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service, with a helicopter landing on the A189.

“One patient has been taken to Cramlington Hospital with serious injuries.”

The closure of the Spine Road has caused huge delays to traffic with diversions now in place.

Officers are currently conducting inquiries at the scene and are awaiting recovery of the vehicles involved.
