First image of £4 million health centre planned for Mountain Ash

The full plans to build a new million health care centre for GP services in Mountain Ash have been revealed.

A planning application has gone in to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council for Mountain Ash Surgery which will provide GP services for 10,500 people.

The two-storey building would be based between Miskin Road and Henry Street to the south of Mountain Ash railway station.

Apollo Capital Projects has applied for permission to build the new surgery on behalf of Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

Along with improvements over the existing surgery facilities, it will provide a number of community facilities including a health education room and facilities for community-based staff.

A public exhibition was held in December for people to see the plans for themselves and funding for the project was approved by Welsh Government at the start of 2019.

The building would become the new home of current surgeries Rhos House and Cynon Vale which currently have "insufficient accommodation for their needs" according to the design and access statement submitted with the application.

It also refers to the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board's estate strategy, which says the current GP facilities fall well below acceptable standards and are not compliant in terms of infection control and disability access.

There is also concern raised that there is currently no capacity for any more patients and that this could become an issue with the population growth in the region.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, the leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, tweeted that construction could start in October or November this year if the planning and development committee gave it the green light.

The applicant said there was a large amount of space between the proposed building and those nearby and the view of the building was obscured by the memorial garden.

The plan also includes car parking as well as bin and bicycle storage.
