First funeral to take place for Dublin student after Greece holiday tragedy

One of the two tragic students who died in separate incidents on a Greek island will be buried today.

A funeral Mass for Max Wall, 18, will take place at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook, Dublin. He will be buried at Kilternan Cemetery Park immediately afterwards.

The funeral Mass for his friend Andrew O’Donnell, 18, will take place in the same church on Wednesday. The teens had recently finished their Leaving Cert exams and had been on a holiday to the island of Ios as part of a large group of students.

The classmates, who were former students of St Michael’s College in Ballsbridge, died in separate incidents last weekend. Last Wednesday, initial results from their postmortems revealed Andrew died from a fall while Max’s death was attributed to cardiac problems.

They added: “The world has lost a little colour. Max, with a larger than life personality brought great joy to the lives of his family and friends and everyone he came in contact with.

“During his short time, he faced numerous challenges with great courage and bravery and always maintained his most positive sunny fun filled self.”

Meanwhile, Andrew’s parents Bebhinn and Gavin and brother Rory said in his death notice he leaves “a void that can never be filled”. They added: “Andrew brought immense joy to the lives of his family, friends, and all who knew him.

“He possessed a vibrant spirit, a kind heart, and a sense of humour that brightened the darkest of days.”
