First footie tournament in memory of EK sporting stalwart is fitting tribute

A football tournament in memory of a stalwart of sport in East Kilbride proved to be a fitting tribute.

The Angus McConnell Memorial event was held at Kirktonholme Park recently, on the pitch named in honour of Angus.

He passed away in February aged 90 and was a founder member of both East Kilbride Sports Council and East Kilbride YM FC.

The tournament was hosted by East Kilbride Old Parish Church, where Angus was a senior elder, in conjunction with EK YM FC.

The weather was glorious sunshine and a large crowd of family, friends and church members turned out and enjoyed a wonderful day of fun, football and food.

The six teams who entered were: East Kilbride Old; St Kenneth’s PS/St Bride’s EK; Cambuslang; EK South; Claremont EK and Strathaven Trinity.

Around 70, mainly primary school-aged, boys and girls from P1-P7 took part and they all played really well in a fun but competitive competition.

The event was played in a ‘round robin’ league format, with each team playing each other once, and the team who finished top at the end of all 15 matches were declared the winners.

And the first ever winners of the Angus McConnell Memorial Shield were a joint team from St Kenneth's PS and St Bride’s EK, who went undefeated and were worthy winners.

The shield was presented by members of Angus' family.

Organisers would like to thank the committee of EK YM for the use of the pitch, supplying all the children with a medal, and treating all players to a hot dog, drink, and other goodies at the end.

Also thanks go to the three match officials, Bobby Madden, David Roome and Craig Napier as well as the stewards, first aiders, team managers and all those who helped in any way to make the day such a great success.

Above all, thanks go to the children who took part and had great fun. They were a great credit to themselves, their families and their church.

It is hoped the tournament will become an annual event.
