First footage of crash scene in Gateshead after car veers off road and hits tree

A major roundabout in Gateshead will be closed for several hours after a serious car crash.

The roundabout at the old Swallow Hotel, between Old Durham Road and High West Street, has been closed after a car left the road and hit a tree.

Three ambulances were called to the single-car collision which happened just before 9am on Saturday.

The condition of those involved is not currently known.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said the roundabout would be closed for around five hours.

Officers are carrying out a collision investigation and could be seen putting markers on the grass verge and taking photographs of the crash scene.

Traffic is being diverted off the roundabout towards the B1295 to Wrekenton.

A number of Go North East buses are diverting away from the roundabout during the closure.

Northumbria Police said on social media: "The Five Bridges roundabout in Gateshead is currently closed due to a road traffic collision. Please try and avoid the area if you can."
