First footage from the scene as murder investigation is launched in Leam Lane

This is the first footage from the scene of a murder investigation in Gateshead.

A 28-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Leam Lane on Friday night and detectives have since arrested three people in connection with the incident.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Chevington at around 8pm after reports that a man had suffered injuries consistent with a stabbing.

The victim was taken to hospital by paramedics but died later that evening despite the efforts of medical staff.

Officers have been carrying out an investigation throughout the night and three people have been arrested and remain in custody.

Forensic teams can be seen carrying out investigations at the scene on Saturday morning and a cordon remains in place.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Graeme Dodds has said the cordon will remain in place throughout the day.

He said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of the man who has lost his life as a result of this suspected assault.

“We are treating this as a murder and believe the incident has taken place inside a nearby address following a dispute between people who are known to one another.

“The victim is then thought to have walked into the street where he has collapsed.

“Three people, who are all known to the victim, are currently in police custody and are being questioned in relation to the incident.

“A cordon will remain in place today to allow us to carry out forensic enquiries in the area.

“We do not believe there is any wider risk to the public but officers are on patrol to carry out enquiries and offer reassurance to any concerned residents.

“The victim’s family are obviously devastated and we would ask that the public respect their privacy at this difficult time.”

Anyone who has information about the suspected assault is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log 1097 11/09/20.

You can also report online at the Northumbria Police website or report anonymously by contacting independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
