Firefighters are tackling a "large scale fire" at a Hexham paper mill.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service posted on social media at around 3.50pm on Thursday that crews were tackling a blaze at Fourstones Paper Mill, Hexham.

A spokesperson said seven fire engines had been sent to the scene to deal with the situation.

The blaze is still ongoing and firefighters are being assisted by the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

Smoke can still be seen coming from the paper mill building with fire crews using hoses to try to extinguish the flames.

It is not yet known if the paper mill has been badly damaged in the blaze.

Northumbria Police were initially called to assist with the fire service in managing traffic around the area.

Emergency services have asked the public to avoid the area and nearby roads have been closed.
