First footage from the scene as firefighters tackle huge blaze in County Durham

Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze at a former industrial site in County Durham.

Crews from across the county were called out to the former Eldon Brickworks site near Bishop Auckland early on Monday morning.

Footage and pictures from the scene show plumes of smoke billowing into the air which can be scene from as far away as the A1 between junctions 59 and 60.

A spokesperson for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said on Facebook: "We are currently dealing with a large incident in the Eldon Area of Bishop Auckland.

"There are seven appliances, an Aerial Ladder Platform, a Bulk Water Tanker and a number of senior officers in attendance.

"Members of the public in the vicinity are advised to keep their doors and windows closed due to large amounts of smoke and possible hazardous materials being involved."

There are also officials from Durham County Council at the scene and the authority confirmed they were working with firefighters.

A council spokesperson said on Twitter: "We are working with colleagues @CDDFRS (the fire service) on a fire at the former Eldon Brickworks site.

"There is no risk to the public, but residents in the area are advised to keep windows and doors closed and avoid the immediate area."
