First footage from the scene as firefighters tackle blaze at Sunderland factory

Firefighters are tackling a large blaze at a factory in Sunderland.

Residents in the area are being urged to keep their windows and doors closed as clouds of black smoke billow above the factory.

Crews from Sunderland and South Shields are in attendance at the scene in the Hendon area and an aerial platform ladder is in use.

A spokeswoman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We currently have five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform dealing with a factory fire on Hendon Street, Sunderland.

"We received the call at 12.50 and dispatched crews from Sunderland Central, Farringdon, South Shields and Marley Park.

"Please avoid the area and if you live nearby, keep your windows and doors closed."
