First footage from South Shields crash which left one man dead and woman fighting for life

This is the scene of devastation after a car crashed into a house in South Shields killing the driver.

The fatal collision happened on Chichester Road just before 4.15am on Friday when a white Audi S3 collided into an end terrace house.

The driver, a man who has not yet been formally identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female passenger was critically injured and a male passenger suffered serious injuries and was found in hospital after leaving the scene.

Nobody in the house was injured.

The road has been taped off and footage shows tarpaulin over the mangled wreckage of the car.

Significant damage was caused to the home with the door and bay window destroyed.

Debris was scattered around the street and emergency services are now attempting to make sure the structure is safe.

The road has been taped off for around six hours and arrangements are now being made for the car to be recovered.

Northumbria Police officers are investigating what happened in the lead-up to the collision and have asked any witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 85 24/01/20 or via the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
