First footage from scene as boy, 11, rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by car

An 11-year-old boy has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries after being hit by a car in North Shields.

Emergency services rushed to Howdon Road following a report of a collision at 3.30pm on Wednesday.

A schoolboy was found at the scene suffering with serious injuries to both his head and leg.

Paramedics have transported him to hospital and his next of kin have been informed.

Police have closed Howdon Road in both directions as officers investigate at the scene and to allow a clean-up operation to take place.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 3.30pm today (Wednesday), police received a report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Howdon Road, North Shields.

“Emergency services attended and an 11-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his leg and head. His next of kin has already been made aware of the incident.

“The road is currently closed between Minton Lane and Waterville Road as police carry out relevant enquiries and a clean-up operation takes place. It is expected to remain closed for the next hour.

“Any witnesses are asked to contact 101 quoting reference 624 161019 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
