First footage from scene as murder investigation is launched in Newcastle

This was the scene after a murder investigation was launched following a stabbing in Newcastle city centre.

A huge cordon was erected around Eldon Square Shopping Centre following the incident on Wednesday evening.

Police received a report that a 52-year-old man had been assaulted outside the Greggs near Old Eldon Square.

The man was taken to hospital with "injuries consistent with a stabbing", where he later died.

Six males have now been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Detective Superintendent John Bent, of Northumbria Police, said: “First and foremost our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who has sadly lost his life.

“We’re appealing for anyone who may have information, or who may have witnessed the incident to get in touch with us as any information could be vital.

“Enquiries are ongoing and I want to reassure the public that officers will be carrying out further enquiries and conducting patrols in the area so if you have any concerns please speak to officers."

Anyone with information is asked to call Northumbria Police on 101.
