This was the scene after a hit-and-run on a street in Birtley.
Emergency services were called to just after 5am on Sunday.
Northumbria Police say and the driver then fled the scene.
On Sunday afternoon, police cordoned off part of the road as detectives carried out their investigations.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called just after 5am to a road traffic collision on Ravensworth Road at the junction of Station Lane.
“An ambulance and a doctor from the air ambulance unit were dispatched to the scene.
“A male patient suffered head and leg injuries and was transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.”
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “We received a call at 5.08am to a report of a hit-and-run of a pedestrian on Ravensworth Road in Birtley.
“A 27-year-old man was hit by a vehicle that then made off from the scene.
“We have a police presence still on Ravensworth Road as our officers continue to conduct enquiries into the circumstances of the incident."
