First footage as car collides with Metro train at Callerton Parkway station

A car has been damaged but the occupants escaped unscathed after it collided with a Metro train at a level crossing.

Footage from the scene of the incident at Callerton Parkway Metro Station shows significant damage to the driver's side door of the silver vehicle, where it was struck by the train.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the collision, which happened at just after 10am on Saturday.

The incident caused the Metro service to be suspended in both directions between Kingston Park and Newcastle International Airport as firefighters and police officers worked at the scene.

Nobody was seriously injured in the crash.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 10.15am police received a call that a car had been involved in a collision with a Metro train near to Callerton Metro Station.

"Emergency services attended but thankfully nobody has been seriously injured. Officers remain at the scene and the Metro line is currently closed”

Metro services resumed in the area at just before midday.
