First flight to Port Macquarie takes off

TAKE OFF:Newcastle Airport business development manager Matt Borger, Fly Pelican pilot Sai Ng and Fly Pelican CEO Marty Hawley on the tarmac on Thursday before the flight.

PORT Macquarie in only 30 minutes. No long drive.

That's the appeal of taking a FlyPelican flight between Newcastle Airport and the Mid North Coast town.

The Hunter-based airline launched its inaugural flight between the destinations on Thursday, a return service from Newcastle which will run weekly at this stage.

The flight from Williamtown leaves at 1.30pm.

The flight back leaves Port Macquarie at 7.30pm. One-way fares start from $85.

"The schedule suits people from Newcastle and Port Macquarie looking to spend an afternoon with clients and return home the same evening," Fly Pelican CEO Marty Hawley said.

"It will also offer the opportunity to spend a week away with family and friends.

"Local getaways are becoming increasingly popular, and we look forward to connecting the two regions."

The Port Macquarie flights are the second new route Fly Pelican has launched in a matter of months after commencing a Sunshine Coast service in January.

Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock said the expanding network was diversifying travel options for Hunter and northern NSW communities.

"What we've seen over the last 12 months is strong, ongoing demand for air travel to and from our catchment from a number of regional destinations," he said.

"This includes Canberra, Sunshine Coast, Lord Howe Island, and now Port Macquarie. This supports our region by enhancing connectivity, allowing customers from regional NSW easier access to the services available in Newcastle and the ability to use Newcastle Airport as a hub to get to where they need to go."
