The first woman to be elected mayor of Bogota, Colombia, has married her partner in a civil ceremony.

On Monday, Claudia López shared pictures on social media taken during her private civil ceremony to lawyer and politician Angélica Lozano.

López described the occasion as the “happiest moment” of her life, revealing that she and Lozano both wore matching white ensembles and carried bouquets of little white flowers.

“I love you my divine Angelica!” the elected mayor wrote. “Thank you for existing and for always loving me. I promise to honour you and love you all your life!”

López also expressed her gratitude for her “wonderful year”, having graduated with a doctorate, been elected mayor of the Colombian capital and “married the love of her life”.

On 27 October 2019, López was elected the first female and openly lesbian mayor of Bogota. The politician is due to take office in January.

Five years ago, the 49-year-old was elected to the Colombian Senate as a candidate for the centrist Green Alliance party.

"We are an innovative party that protects the resources of the nation, where we all have the same possibilities," the party writes on Facebook.

López was a vice-presidential candidate for her party during Colombia's 2018 presidential election.

Her partner, Lozano, became the first openly lesbian legislator in Colombia in 2014, where she continually speaks out about LGBT+ issues.

Several social media users shared messages of congratulations with the couple on the occasion of their marriage.

“Congratulations. May your love last beyond time,” one person tweeted.

“What beautiful photos, congratulations!” another commented.

Colombia became the fourth country in South America to legalise same-sex marriage in April 2016.
