First ever gold for Team GB in BMX at the Olympics as Bethany Shriever takes top honours after Kye Whyte is narrowly denied

The Gold rush continued for Team GB in Tokyo last night as Bethany Shriever took top spot in the women’s BMX bike race.

The 22-year-old has overcome a lot to even make it to Tokyo. Funding was cut for the women’s BMX programme and she was forced to set up a crowdfunding page to even make it. She also took a part time job as a teaching assistant.

Shriever said: “Honestly, I'm in shock. To even be here is an achievement in itself.

"To make a final is another achievement in itself. To win a medal, let alone a gold medal, I'm over the moon.

"It wasn't my goal - results are out of our control. To keep to my routine and keep cool around the track, I managed to hold and earn the win. It is crazy."

It was a great night for Team GB in the world of BMX as Kye Whyte also took home a medal in the men’s race finishing second to claim the silver.

They are the first two medals of any kind for GB in BMX at the Olympics.

Whyte, who is also 22-years-old missed out on the gold by an agonising 0.114 seconds.

Shriever said of Whyte: “I was watching him as I was going up. I was almost crying because he got a silver. I had to keep my cool and reset and just dig in. I gave it everything I got.

"I had nothing left, the lactic acid was crazy. I gave it absolutely everything I had."
