First electric Mini charges in... 60 years after original car rolled off the line

The first all-electric Mini motor car was unveiled today.

The Mini Electric’s claimed range is 124-144 miles, the distance from London to Derby, with a full charge time of three and-a-half hours.

Made at BMW’s Oxford plant, it goes from zero to 60mph in about seven seconds, though its speed is limited to 93mph.

The vehicle uses electric motors developed by BMW for a maximum 184 horsepower, but the £24,400 price tag for the entry-level three-door hatchback is significantly more than the cost of the 1.5-litre petrol model which is just over £16,000.

This year marks 60 years since the first Mini rolled off the lines at Oxford.

BMW’s Oliver Zipse said: “We are entering an era in which electric cars will become a normal choice.”
