First Derivatives founder Brian Conlon dies age 53

The founder of technology company First Derivatives has died, after announcing his cancer diagnosis in May.

Brian Conlon, 53, continued to be heavily involved in the Newry-based company throughout his treatment.

A spokesperson for the company said: " FD regrets to announce that, further to the RNS on 17 May 2019 announcing his diagnosis with cancer, Chief Executive Officer Brian Conlon passed away on 28 July.

"The Group has initiated a process to appoint a new Chief Executive Officer and will provide an update on progress with that process in due course.

"In the interim period, Non-Executive Chairman Seamus Keating has been appointed Executive Chairman with immediate effect."

Seamus Keating commented: “Brian built a world-class business in First Derivatives. His drive, ambition and determination inspired all who had the privilege to work with him.

"This news is a profound shock to all of us. We offer Brian’s family our sincerest condolences and ask for privacy on their behalf at this sad and most difficult of times.”

Founded in 1996, the company is described as a 'leading provider of products and consulting services to some of the world’s largest finance, technology and energy institutions' with 2,400 employees.

Down GAA paid tribute to Mr Conlon said said he was "one of the most talented footballers to wear the Red and Black in the mid 1980's before injury cut short what could have been a most promising career".

"Brian was a great friend to Down GAA in so many ways, quietly and without ceremony he made a difference to the County just as he made a difference for his home city of Newry, where he created employment and never ever forgot his roots," a spokesperson said.

"On behalf of Down GAA we extend our sympathies to Brian's wife Julie, his beloved children, his mum Josephine, sister Kathy, brother Ciaran and the entire Conlon family circle."

Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy has expressed great sadness at the death of the Northern Ireland businessman.

He said: “I engaged with Brian on numerous occasions and always found him to be hugely committed to the Newry area and region.

“Brain Conlon and his partners have grown First Derivatives from a small local company into a globally renowned company, over those years they have given many young people from the area and across Ireland opportunities to gain employment and to travel the world.

“I would like to extend my sympathy to Brian’s wife, children and entire family circle.”
