Aintree Racecourse will change the name of the first day of the Grand National Festival 2021 and dedicate it to the NHS.

This year's Grand National Festival was due to take place from today - Thursday, April 2 - however was cancelled two weeks ago to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Looking ahead to next year, the first day of the festival, which falls on Thursday, April 8 will be called 'Liverpool's NHS Day'.

As well as the name change, organisers says the whole day will "be dedicated to our NHS heroes".

Its tweet said: "#ThankYouNHS.

"Liverpool's NHS Day

"We will donating 10,000 tickets to the @NHSuk for the first day of the 2021 @RandoxHealth Grand National Festival.

"The day will also be dedicated to our NHS heroes and be renamed Liverpool's NHS Day."

Last week people across the country stood on their doorsteps or leaned out their windows and joined in a clap to honour the NHS workers on the frontline of the fight against coronavirus.

Aintree's Grand National Festival 2021 will take place from Thursday, April 8 - Saturday, April 10.

However, for those missing the action from the course already this year, ITV will be screening a Virtual Grand National at 5pm on Saturday, April 4.
