First Dates singleton ‘offended’ after her non-religious date doubts the Immaculate Conception

First Dates aired an awkward moment when two singletons discussed attitudes to religion as the series returned on Thursday. The first episode of the new series introduced viewers to Gracey, 28, who is an IT entrepreneur that was desperately searching for love. She was paired with Meshack, 37, who is a software engineer.

Prior to her date Gracey said: "I want to p*** my pants. I've never done a blind date before." But little did she know, the man she'd go on a date with was going to comment on her religious beliefs. The 28-year-old spoke about how, in her last relationship, she was abstinent and that she was hoping to meet someone who would agree to wait until marriage before having sex. She described how she felt that "Jesus is the number one man in [her] life".

During their date Gracey and Meshack discussed the topic of religion. When Gracey described how her and her last boyfriend were celibate for more than five years Meshack persisted on asking her whether it was "what she wanted," – something that didn't go down well.

He proceeds to cast doubt on Immaculate Conception – the belief that the Virgin Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception. Meshack said: "I said to my Mum: 'You believed that Mary had an immaculate conception' and she looked me dead in the eyes and said: 'Yeah'."

He added that when he asked his mother how she'd feel if he got a girl pregnant and told her: "We didn't have sex" she would say: "It's a different time now". Gracey appeared to be visibly angry by his insensitive comments.

Despite that when asked whether they would see each other again Gracey told Meshack that she would. Meshack, on the other hand, said: "I think she's great. I'd love to hang out with her in the future. I don't see her in a romantic capacity but she's great." It was here that Gracey told him that she was "slightly offended" by his earlier remarks.

Gracey said: "There were a few things that you said to me that were red flags," before adding: "I was slightly offended." As the pair walked out of the restaurant Gracey told Meshack that he was "cute" before telling her taxi driver: "It was never going to work out."
