First COVID death in Perth and Kinross since April as infection rate continues to creep up

Perth and Kinross recorded its first COVID death since April last week.

Official figures from the National Records of Scotland showed six deaths across the country had the coronavirus on the certificate between May 10 and May 16.

One of these was in Perth and Kinross with the others being in North Lanarkshire (three) and Glasgow (two).

It brings the total number of people who have died from COVID-19 in Perth and Kinross to 253.

Across the country, monthly figures show that post COVID-19 conditions, including “long COVID”, were mentioned on 11 death certificates in the period from March 2020 to April 2021.

In addition, three deaths in Scotland have been recorded with the underlying cause of death being due to adverse effects of COVID-19 vaccines, although that is in the context of 2.81 million people receiving at least one vaccine by the end of April.

The current COVID infection rate in Perth and Kinross is 27 per 100,000 people after 41 cases in the week from May 9 to 15.

That is an increase from a rate of 14.5 the week before after 22 positive tests.

Two neighbourhoods in the region are recording infection rates above 150 per 100,000 - Moncrieffe and Friarton (172) and Muirton (165.2).
