First coronavirus deaths since July recorded at Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals trust

Two new coronavirus-related deaths were recorded at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust this week.

These are the first recorded deaths since July 24, and bring the overall death toll to 153.

The deaths were recorded on September 19 and 22.

Three deaths were also confirmed at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The trust runs the Royal, Aintree and Broadgreen hospitals.

A further two coronavirus-related deaths were recorded at Wirral University Hospitals Trust, which runs Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge hospitals.

The NHS England figures, updated daily, refer to people who died and had “either tested positive for Covid-19 or where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate”.

With coronavirus cases having surged on Merseyside over the past month, the latest deaths may have been among people who contracted the condition during the increase in positive Covid-19 tests.

The NHS figures only refer to hospital deaths, so the true number of deaths linked to coronavirus on Merseyside will be far higher once tragedies in other settings, including care homes, are taken into account

Hospital deaths linked to Covid-19 often take days to be confirmed publicly, so more may have died in local trust facilities over recent days.

The total number of deaths in all settings nationally was 40 yesterday – with the UK’s coronavirus cases rising by 6,634, the highest reported during the course of the pandemic.

Yvonne Doyle, medical health director at Public Health England, said the increase in infections should be a “stark warning to us all”.

Figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 57,600 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
