First coronavirus death in Scotland confirmed

The first patient has died in Scotland after testing positive for the coronavirus.

Catherine Calderwood, Scotland's chief medical officer, confirmed it was an older person who passed away.

It's believed the person had underlying medical conditions.

"I offer my deepest sympathy to their friends and family at this difficult time.

"The patient, who was being treated by Lothian Health Board was an older person who had underlying health conditions.

"No further information will be available to protect patient confidentiality."

The news comes as it was revealed that 85 patients have now been diagnosed with Coronavirus in Scotland - after 25 new cases were confirmed today.

The Scottish Government revealed the new cases this afternoon, just hours after the Scottish FA cancelled all domestic professional and grassroots football until further notice.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also revealed yesterday gatherings of over 500 were to be banned from Monday.

A total of 3,314 tests have been concluded in Scotland with 3,229 negative.

The number of UK coronavirus cases has risen to 798 - the largest day-on-day increase since the outbreak began.

It is a jump of 208, which is 35% up on the equivalent figure for Thursday.

It is the first time the day-on-day increase has been higher than 200.

One week ago, on March 6, the total number of cases stood at 163.

Today’s total of 798 is almost five times greater than the equivalent figure one week ago.
