First case of coronavirus in North Somerset confirmed

Coronavirus has spread to North Somerset with Public Health England confirming a first case in the district tonight.

The body publishes a daily list providing a break-down of where the disease cases are.

And while Bristol remains at two, according to the PHE, North Somerset now has one.

South Gloucestershire has none.

In Bristol, the figure has been disputed by the city council which yesterday said there was only one case in the city. The difference could be down to an infected worker who was in Bristol but is now in China.

It is not known where in North Somerset the case is.

A total of 41 cases have been confirmed by PHE for the South West.

Across the UK, some 373 people have been infected, with the death toll now rising to six.

The new total means the UK has the fifth highest number of confirmed cases in Europe, according to the World Health Organisation, behind Italy, France, Germany and Spain.

Meanwhile, NHS GP appointments in the UK are to be held via phone or video link with "immediate effect" to limit the spread of coronavirus, the Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced.

Several airline, including British Airways, Ryanair and Wizz Air, have cancelled all routes to and from Italy.

Spain has today reported a trebling of cases in the last two days to 1,622.
