First Caledonian Sleeper train arrives at London Euston three hours late

The first overnight rail journey on the new-look Caledonian Sleeper trains arrived at London Euston from Edingburgh and Glasgow three hours and 20 minutes late.

The new Caledonian Sleeper train, part of a £150 million fleet, was due to arrive in the capital at 7.07am.

However passengers on the train pulled into Euston’s platform 1 at 10.27am after signalling failures across the rail network delayed the service.

The overnight train arrived 80 minutes after the first daytime service from Glasgow.

The new-look revitalised trains feature en-suite toilets and wet rooms and double beds in the most expensive cabins.

The pioneering Caledonian Sleeper left Glasgow Central 10 minutes late at 9.05pm and arrived in Edinburgh more than two hours late, Real Times Trains data showed.

The train then departed from Edinburgh at 2.48am, three-and-a-half hours behind schedule, catching up a few minutes on the journey south.

Paul Gilhooley, a passenger on the service tweeted: “Edinburgh to London – delay, delay and an absolute lack of any honest communication.

Serco, which runs the Caledonia Sleeper on behalf of the Scottish government, replied: “Hi Paul – apologies for this.

“We are doing all we can to make up time. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

Ryan Flaherty, Serco’s Managing Director for Caledonian Sleeper, said: “We apologise to guests affected by delays to our services last night. These were as a result of signalling problems across the network.

"We are engaging with Network Rail to understand why these issues occurred.”

However, some travellers have given the new service rave reviews, highlighting it’s “hotel feel”.

Travel writer, Mark Smith said: “The New Caledonian Sleeper trains are fabulous."

He told the Evening Standard: "They’ve a hotel feel, great beds by Glencraft, good food in the lounge car and now en suites too.

"It’s as good or better than anything you’ll find in Europe."

“Bit more pressure in the shower would be ideal and I missed the coat hangers – but details aside these new trains are superb,” he added on Twitter.

Scottish Transport secretary, Michael Matheson joined other MSPs like Richard Lyle to send off the new Caledonia Sleeper train before it left Glasgow station last night.
