First Bus investigating claim driver was 'reading a newspaper'

First Bus is investigating claims one of its drivers was reading a newspaper while driving a Bristol bus.

A picture of the driver, taken by a shocked passenger this morning (September 10), appears to show the driver flicking through a newspaper while held up in traffic.

The photo was then shared on Twitter, with the passenger claiming the driver was reading the newspaper while the bus was moving.

They said: "Hi there @FirstBSA is it legal for one of your drivers to read a newspaper whilst driving a bus full of passengers. NOT stationary but moving down a major A road?"

The passenger later clarified he was on the 44 bus heading towards Redfield when the picture was taken.

First Bus told Bristol Live it expects the "highest standards" from its staff.

“This incident has been brought to our attention and we are currently investigating the matter," a spokesperson for the bus operator said.

"The safety of our customers is our number one priority and if appropriate, this will be taken forward under our disciplinary procedure.

"We expect the highest standards of behaviour from all our staff and very much regret anything otherwise.”
