First British person arrested for failing to self-isolate due to coronavirus reported on Isle of Man

Police on the Isle of Man have arrested a man for failing to adhere to new coronavirus legislation requiring him to self isolate.

It’s believed to be the first arrest for not self-isolating in the entirety of the British Isles.

The Isle of Man passed emergency legislation on Tuesday, giving police the ability to arrest anyone who arrives on the island and fails to isolate for a 14-day period, even if they show no symptoms.

The penalties for not complying can include jail time or a fine up to £10,000.

The Isle of Man Constabulary wrote on Facebook: “We currently have one male in police custody for failing to adhere to the new legislation requiring him to self isolate.

“Please follow the guidance issued by the Government and think about the safety of the community. This is an ever evolving situation and it is important we act in the best interests of keeping people safe.”

In an earlier post they urged the public to spread word of the new legislation, writing: “Make sure all know the rules. This is literally about saving lives and it could be your loved ones at risk.”

The Isle's Chief Minister Howard Quayle said the measures were designed to protect "residents and to ensure life can continue as normal as possible during this unpredictable time".

He added that they measures would help minimise "the risk of those arriving in the Island infecting our population."

As of March 20, the island was reporting just one confirmed case of the virus.

Meanwhile, the UK has confirmed 3,200 cases and more than 140 deaths.
