Businesses welcome drive against red tape

The private sector has welcomed the government's accelerating efforts to remove laws and regulations that hamper business, saying the initiative would sharpen the country's competitiveness.

The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) said 11 of its 58 proposals for amendments to secondary legislation have been identified as measures that can be implemented immediately or are already under way.

Another 21 require coordination with state agencies, while 26 need further study of their suitability and policy impacts.

The committee praised Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapunt, who has been leading the government's legal reform drive, saying the approach demonstrated stronger cooperation between the public and private sectors.

The reforms are being pursued through the Joint Public-Private Consultative Committee, following a government decision to prioritise specific legal obstacles identified by businesses rather than develop a broad master plan.

Mr Pakorn said on July 31 that the government was fast-tracking amendments to more than 100 laws identified by businesses as obstacles to investment and operations.

Proposals submitted mainly by the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Chamber of Commerce are being ranked according to their economic impact and potential to strengthen competitiveness.

The government has said priority will be given to measures that can be amended quickly and deliver direct benefits to businesses, particularly in tourism and industry, where rising costs and intensifying global competition are putting pressure on operators.
