Fireworks thrown on pitch during Shamrock Rovers and Waterford FC match

Play was stopped during tonight's Shamrock Rovers and Waterford FC match after a firework was thrown on the pitch by "visiting supporters".

Referee Rob Hennessy stopped play at the Waterford Regional Sports Centre in the sixteenth minute and escorted players off the pitch.

The home team were leading 1-0 after a goal in the 12th minute.

Waterford FC tweeted: "Players being taken off the pitch by referee Rob Hennessy - visiting supporters setting off fireworks on the pitch."

The match resumed in the 24th minute and Waterford FC lead 1-0 at half time.
