Fireworks thrown at tree and playground torched on busy night for firefighters

A lit firework was thrown at a tree while a playground was torched during a series of arson attacks on Saturday night.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to a number of 'nuisance fires' throughout the evening.

At 5.40pm, crews were scrambled to a park on Ashton Old Road to reports a tree was on fire after a lit firework was thrown at it.

Then at 8.50pm, firefighters were called to Ashton Heath in Ashton-In-Makerfield, to reports a fire had been started on open land and youths were hiding in the woods after throwing fireworks.

Then at 9.36pm, yobs set fire to a play park on Gotherage Lane, Romiley.

It followed a busy Friday evening in which arsonists set fire to a bin outside a shop in Leigh, while children torched playground items in Davyhulme.

On Thursday, a watch manager was hit by a lit firework as he tackled a bonfire in Crumpsall Park.

Paul Marston, 50, suffered a small burn above his right ear when he was hit by the firework on Thursday, October 31.
