Fireworks night at Ayr Rugby Club cancelled after devastating explosion in Kincaidston

Ayr's main fireworks display has been cancelled following the devastating events of Monday night in Kindaidston.

Organisers had been set to welcome thousands through the gates at Ayr Rugby Club for the annual spectacular on Friday, November 5.

But following discussions between bosses at Millbrae and South Ayrshire Council, it has been confirmed the event will take a year out.

A club spokesman said: "Ayr Rugby have made the decision to cancel their upcoming fireworks night out of respect for the residents of Kincaidston.

"As a community club, Ayr Rugby feel it is only right to express support to Kincaidston’s ongoing campaign to end fireworks displays whilst they recover from the tragic events of Monday night.

"The Ayr Rugby Fireworks Display is one of the biggest events on the town’s social calendar, however it would be disrespectful to continue given the current situation.

"The club look forward to its return in 2022.

"Ayr Rugby also aim to extend further support to the Kincadston community in the coming weeks."

A large number of residents remain outwith their homes in Gorse Park following the explosion, which has left a family of four in hospital.

The mum, aged 43, and her eldest son, aged 16, are in a critical condition in Glasgow's Royal Infirmary.

A huge community effort has mobilised to support those left stranded by the effects of the blast.
