FIREWORK control zones will be increased to cover 14 areas in Edinburgh this year as part of efforts to curb disorder around bonfire night.
Edinburgh City Council said the zones, first introduced in 2024, have helped reduce anti-social behaviour during “firework season”.
Firework control zones (FCZs) banning the use of fireworks will be in place in the 14 areas between October 30 and November 8 this year, up from nine areas last year.
Councillors have agreed FCZs for Corstorphine, Liberton Grange, Lochend, Longstone, Moredun, Sighthill/Broomhouse, Stenhouse/Gaskell Street, The Murrays, West Pilton, Wester Hailes, Balerno, Calton Hill, Niddrie and Seafield.
The council’s culture and communities convener Margaret Graham said: “We know that fireworks can have a significant impact on vulnerable people and pets, which is why it’s important that we use every tool available to support safer celebrations.
“Firework control zones are an important part of our wider approach to keeping communities safe during bonfire night and reduce the disruption that fireworks can cause.
“We will continue to work closely with Police Scotland and local communities to ensure bonfire night is as safe and enjoyable as possible for everyone.”
The council said that work between the local authority and police has led to a substantial reduction in the number of retailers selling fireworks in the city in recent years.
It said that in 2024 there were 33 traders selling fireworks in Edinburgh but by 2025 that had fallen to two.
