Police called to stand-off at Don Dale youth detention centre

Staff at the Don Dale youth detention centre were unable to control a group of detainees on Friday night.

Four young people have been removed from Darwin's Don Dale youth detention centre after damaging infrastructure and attempting to light fires during a three-hour stand-off.

According to a Territory Families spokesperson, the youths refused to go to their rooms after dinner last night.

They then gained access to a staff only area, damaged infrastructure and tried to light a fire.

Police were called to the centre at 6pm and the situation was resolved three hours later.

The four young people will remain at the police watch house until an investigation is completed.

No staff or young people were injured.

No charges have yet been laid.

Friday night's incident came after two guards were hospitalised during a disturbance at the Alice Springs youth detention centre a week ago.

The ABC has been told three of the four detainees involved in last night's Don Dale stand-off had been transferred from the Central Australian facility for their role in last week's incident.

Workers at Don Dale have been voicing concern and frustration at operations inside the centre in recent months, saying under-staffing is making conditions unsafe for them and the young people detained.
