NAGOYA -- Small, flickering lights among the trees in the Aioiyana green area in Tempaku Ward, Nagoya, reveal the erratic seasonal dance of fireflies.
The fireflies here are a small, thoroughly terrestrial type called himebotaru. Even the largest ones measure less than a centimeter long.
When the night deepens in the glowing insects' early-summer breeding season, the males and the slightly smaller females both blink with a golden light in search of their would-be partners. The male fireflies dance slowly at an altitude about the height of a person's waist.
"I hope we can see those beautiful lights forevermore," said Kimiko Kondo, the head of a local nature observation group who has been observing the fireflies for nearly 30 years. The firefly dance can be seen until early June.
