Firefighting equipment worth $25,000 stolen from burn-off site

Steven Richardson (l) from the Tasmania Fire Service and Inspector Darren Hopkins from the Tasmania Police.

Tasmania Police and firefighters are disappointed at the theft of thousands of dollars worth of firefighting equipment in Tasmania's north.

Staff from the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) discovered a trailer being used to store equipment near Nunamara had been damaged and broken into on Wednesday morning.

The missing equipment included a petrol generator, firefighting pump, UHF radios, an esky and hoses.

The TFS said the combined value of the missing items and the damaged to the trailer was about $25,000.

"That gear was on private land in a very remote area and it was locked and secured," TFS district officer Steven Richardson said.

"Unfortunately it was left there overnight, as crews were returning earlier this morning to carry out additional work."

The TFS was carrying out hazard-reduction burns in the days before the alleged theft.

Police said access to the trailer was only possible using a four-wheel-drive or motorcycle, and that the trailer itself was being kept behind a locked gate.

Mr Richardson said the TFS would "look at" the practice of leaving equipment on private land during planned burning.

"In the past we have left gear on private land because we've known the landowners, we've worked there for considerable periods of time," he said.

"In those areas we have left gear in the past and not experienced any issues like this, so it's quite disappointing."

He said the risk of theft was low because the equipment was specialised firefighting gear with virtually no other uses.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
