Firefighters worry calls to stop burning waste in gardens are being ignored

Firefighters are concerned that pleas for people not to set fire to household waste seem to be falling on deaf ears.

Last week, fire crews in Bolton and Bury dealt with two garden fires that got out of control and spread to people's homes.

Despite a stark warning issued by Paul Fearnhead, the head of prevention at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), lots of people are apparently still setting fire to rubbish in their gardens.

Firefighters from Bolton North Community Fire Station were called to two incidents following complaints of smoke blowing into people's homes but they said it's unfortunately become too regular of an occurrence.

"We seem to be getting a lot of people burning off in their back gardens at night," a spokesman for the station said.

"People seem to think that if they wait until it goes dark and start burning off things in their back gardens after midnight that no one notices, but it's blowing smoke up through everyone's windows.

"It seems to be every afternoon and every night at the moment."

Firefighters believe the issue has been exacerbated by tips being closed but they asked people to be sensible.

A spokesman added: "Please try to refrain from burning off. We understand it's hard because the tips are shut and there's lots of fly-tipping.

"Just have some consideration for your neighbours and others. Don't leave any fires unattended either."
