Firefighters are checking a Griffith building where a unit caught fire on Saturday night before letting residents return.
Smoke and potentially carbon monoxide has remained in some units.
They extinguished the apartment fire on Leichhardt Street, Griffith, on Saturday evening.
The fire was contained to the unit of origin. Several residents had remained on the top floor of the building while firefighters worked to put out the fire.
But residents were not allowed to return to the building on Saturday night.
Because the apartments are so air tight, a lot of smoke and potential carbon monoxide has remained trapped in many of the apartments. Firies are checking levels before we’re allowed back in

That’s the damage to the apartment at the back of the building that caught fire. Pretty extensive damage, we still don’t know what’s caused it pic.twitter.com/LqukGquJXI

The firies have been using this whiteboard to check which properties have been cleared. Ours has been cleared thankfully, but still a few with water damage pic.twitter.com/rrcoRQtjG1

A resident of the Friday apartments reported witnessing a woman on her balcony conversing with firefighters below, with emergency services evacuating the rest of the building.
Firefighters were conducting atmospheric monitoring and air ventilation operations late on Saturday night.
Leichhardt Street at the corner of Wentworth Avenue would remain closed while emergency services were on the scene, the ACT Emergency Services Agency said.
We’re not being let back in tonight. One apartment on the top floor has sustained fire damage, but most have suffered water damage pic.twitter.com/EBhD2btfTU

There’s fire damage to one apartment on the top floor, and water damage to a lot of others on the top floor. Thankfully the fire was out and there were no injuries. Thanks to the @ACT_ESA and the quick thinking neighbours over the road who saw the flames and called 000
