Firefighters work through the night to tackle fire at recycling facility

Firefighters worked through the night to tackle a fire at a recycling facility in Radcliffe.

Several crews were called to the scene near Pioneer Mill, in Milltown Street, at about 8.10pm on Sunday (January 31).

The blaze involved a 'large quantity of baled plastic', according to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS).

Pictures shared on the Spotted:Radcliffe Facebook group showed a large amount of smoke billowing from the fire.

Crews from across the region tackled the flames throughout the night.

They remained at the scene on Monday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is not yet known at this stage.

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At around 8.10pm on Sunday 31 January four fire engines, an aerial appliance, and the air unit from Whitefield, Broughton, Farnworth, Atherton and Agecroft, and Bolton Central fire stations were called to reports of a fire at a recycling facility on Milltown Street, Radcliffe.

“The fire involved a large quantity of baled plastic approximately 20 square metres in size, and firefighters wearing respiratory masks worked hard throughout the evening to extinguish the fire using six jets, two hose reels, and a ground monitor.

“Crews remain in attendance and further inspections are being carried out at the scene.”
